Pemba Powder Red

Suriname – SR048A
Composition: Clay
Colour: Red
Shape: Powder

In a number of countries all over the world, soil eating is a common cultural, spiritual or healing practice. In particular, this tradition is present in Suriname. Apart from being an important part of Winti, Pemba (or Pimba) is an intrinsic component of the culture, as people often eat it as a snack. Especially, Pimba is often consumed by (pregnant) women. This sample was gifted to the Museum of Edible Earth and grinded into powder by one of its fans. It originally had a shape of a ball but was grinded to remove its gritty quality.
