Jatiwangi Art Factory, AOW

Indonesia – ID001A
Composition: Clay
Colour: Brown
Shape: Powder

Very tasty, fine powder, soft, creamy with some sandy bits.

This clay powder was given as a present to masharu during the programme ‘Age of Wonderland’ taking place within the Dutch Design Week in October 2015. The sample was brought to the Netherlands by the artist and designer Arie Syarifuddin for the collaborative project ‘Claynialism’.

Arie Syarifuddin about Claynialism: “Claynialism is an effort to redesign ‘clay’ with all its particularities as the cool yet humble identity of the district. Clay became a part of the peoples’ identity and way of living in Jatiwangi. It is not just the fact that Jatiwangi has economically and culturally thrived through the export and production of ceramic roof tiles. The joint declaration also emphasizes a deeper historic fact, as the Dutch were the ones who introduced this
industry during the colonial era.”

This clay was collected and crushed into powder in the Jatiwangi art Factory (Jaf) in Jatiwangi, Java, Indonesia. JaF is a nonprofit organization that focuses on discourses of local rural life through arts and cultural activities such as festivals, performances, visual art, music, video, ceramics, exhibitions, monthly discussion, radio broadcasts, and education. This clay was eaten by members of JaF and offered for tasting to exhibition audiences in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

Tastes nice, probably with meat. Beetje zoethout, wel de structuur van zoethout. Taste the earth! Lekker zoetig! Zoet/sweet
