This earth was purchased online as a product with food grade. It has been a part of the collection of the Museum of Edible Earth since 2016.
Diatomaceous earth is made from the fossilised remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica. Their shape and hardness produce extremely pure and consistent diatomaceous earth. Over a long period of time, diatoms accumulated in the sediment of rivers, streams, lakes and oceans. Today silica deposits are mined from these areas.
There are two main types of diatomaceous earth: food grade, which is suitable for consumption, and filter grade, which is inedible but has many industrial uses. There are thousands of products that contain diatomaceous earth. These include skin care products, toothpastes, foods, medicines. They may be used as anti-caking materials in food, or as clarifiers for wine and beer.
Food-grade diatomaceous earth has recently become popular as a dietary supplement. It is claimed to have such health benefits as cleansing the digestive tract, improving cholesterol and bone health, providing the body with trace minerals, promoting hair growth, skin health and strong nails.
