This beautiful brown clay sample was obtained during our trip to Indonesia in 2016 in Jatiwangi, at the Jatiwangi Art Factory. It was a gift from Arie Syarifuddin, a cross-disciplinary artist working in the fields of community-based projects, visual art, and music who is part of the Jatiwangi Art Factory. Established on September 27, 2005. This clay originates from Jatiwangi, in the province of West Java, Indonesia. It was produced within the Jatiwangi Art Factory.
The Jatiwangi art Factory (JaF) is a nonprofit organization that focuses on discourses of local rural life through arts and cultural activities such as festivals, performances, visual art, music, video, ceramics, exhibitions, artist in residencies, monthly discussion, radio broadcast and education. JaF has a bi-annual Residency Festival Program and annual Video Residency Festival that invites artists from various disciplines and countries to live, interact, cooperate with the villagers, to feel life in Jatiwangi rural society, formulate and create something that presented to everyone.

Texture feels not so good – sandy dry taste in the mouth. Taste is (unsurprisingly)EARTHY (so I must have eaten earth before 🙂 ) reminds me of tabacco.
Comforting
This one tastes to me like food, herbes and spices as I know it. Very, very rich in taste. I wouldn’t say ‘earth’ if I didnt knew. Lekker!
It taste like part of my childhood when I play in the field and sometime we test earth. We called barro in Spanish, earth that taste a bit of herbs and wet, rich in minerals, not sweet but not sour.

I thought it was going to feel gritty but it was quite smooth and soft
It doesn’t taste like cinnamon, but it has the same drying out effect as you’d expect from cinnamon. It tastes sweet and round and has a pleasant texture.
Creamy, dissolves easily in the mouth, chocolate, slight bitterness.
