Politics at the Kitchen Table. Nutrition in Contemporary Art, Ludwigshafen
On May 23rd, we celebrated the opening night of “Politics at the Kitchen Table. Nutrition in Contemporary Art” at the Wilhelm-Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen am Rhein with a special tasting event that combined earth and wine sampling. We were joined by winemaker Jürgen Düringer – with wine provided from the Georg Mosbacher winery – and curator Julia Katharina Thiemann. This combination of geophagy and wine tasting addressed both the role of soil in flavor and the importance of soil management in winemaking. Overall, this opening event explored the nuances of taste, allowing for engaging conversations about the place of soil in the culinary world.


The larger group exhibition will be ongoing till October 2026, and will explore future-facing modes of eating along with their cultural and political significance. The works address the individual and societal relationship to food, through the tangle of needs, commercial entities, and nature. This constant tension of food shaping us while we manipulate the environment to accommodate our systems of food management and distribution is inherently political. The kitchen table is thus always in a state of flux: How can we understand the kitchen as a personal, as well as, public space which reveals the ecological, social, and political dimensions of nutrition? This exhibition brings together many sociopolitical and ecological dimensions of food from an artistic perspective.
