In July 2025, CALORIE welcomed The Museum of Edible Earth to its programme, expanding an exhibition season that raises urgent questions about nourishment, consumption, and community. Presented by The Science Gallery Bengaluru, CALORIE examines food in a world marked by stark contrasts: abundance and hunger, crop and weed, heirloom and GMO, illness and diet, McDonald’s and MTR. It invites visitors to imagine and shape a food future that is sustainable, just, and rich in flavour, while fostering conversation across disciplines about how and why we eat.

From birth, the impulse to feed and be fed defines life itself—whether an infant nursing or organisms breaking down what has died. The Museum of Edible Earth highlights how sustenance is inseparable from tradition and collective identity. The act of consuming soil, clay, or chalk—known in some cultures and criticised in others—sits at the centre of this inquiry. Praised by some for its perceived health benefits and pathologised by others, the practice prompts a provocative question: should humans eat the earth?

Across continents, communities have long incorporated earth into their diets. This exhibition delves into the meanings attached to that practice and reflects on our enduring relationship with the natural world. As taste offers a new sense to connect with the earth it draws attention to the fact that across the globe, communities have eaten earth.
